Out of the 15 Confucius Institutes in Germany the Confucius Institute Erfurt is the only one, that is integrated into a University of Applied Sciences.
The Institute still benefits from the valuable basic work, that was done in preparation of the foundation. At that time the former president of the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt Prof. Dr. Kill as well as the current German director of the Confucius Institute Erfurt Prof. Dr. Wagner were representing the German side. Since the beginning the close co-operation partner was Zhejiang University of Science & Technology (ZUST) in Hangzhou with its president Prof. Dr. DU Wei as well as the vice president Prof. Dr. LU Jin. As an ideal example of Sino-German cooperation, the four professors invested a lot of energy to create this educational establishment in the center of Thuringia.
With the ceremonial opening on November 7, 2011 foundations for an enriching and future-oriented educational institution in Erfurt were laid. Even the former Chinese ambassador WU Hongbo, the former minister of defense Rudolf Scharping as well as numerous representatives of politics and economy took part in the opening ceremony, showing the significance of this institution. Nowadays the Confucius Institute Erfurt is a cultural center providing an opportunity for many citizens of Thuringia and students of Erfurt to encounter and get to know the Chinese language and culture.
